Certificate in Applied Science
Applied Science combines the study of biology, chemistry and physics with the development of practical laboratory skills and scientific investigation techniques. Designed in collaboration with universities and employers, the course enables students to apply scientific knowledge in real-world contexts while developing analytical, research and problem-solving skills. Through a blend of theoretical learning and practical experience, students gain an understanding of scientific developments and how science is used across a range of industries, making it an excellent complement to A Levels in the sciences and technical qualifications such as Health Science and Sport Science.
Topics covered include:
- Fundamentals of Science
- Laboratory Techniques
- Control of Hazards in the Laboratory
- Microbiology
- Product Testing Techniques
Students will develop practical skills in areas such as titration, colorimetry, chromatography, microbiology and product testing, while gaining an understanding of scientific principles, laboratory safety and professional working practices. The qualification is recognised by universities and carries UCAS tariff points, providing a strong foundation for further study and careers in science, healthcare, research and laboratory-based industries.
Assessment
Assessment is through a combination of examinations and internally assessed coursework, allowing students to demonstrate both their scientific knowledge and practical laboratory skills.
