Mathematics in Context (Core Maths)

Core Maths is a practical Level 3 qualification, equivalent to half an A Level (AS Level), designed to help students develop the mathematical skills needed for everyday life, further study and future employment. Ideal for students who have achieved at least a grade 4 in GCSE Maths and want to continue studying mathematics without taking A Level Mathematics, the course focuses on applying maths in real-world contexts. Students learn how to analyse data, interpret information, manage finances and make informed decisions, while building confidence in using mathematics across a range of subjects and situations. Core Maths is particularly valuable for students studying subjects such as science, geography, psychology, business and health-related courses, where numerical and analytical skills are increasingly important.

Topics covered include:

  • Personal finance and financial decision-making
  • Statistics and data analysis
  • Interpreting and evaluating information
  • Estimation and mathematical modelling
  • Solving real-world problems using mathematics

Assessment

Assessment is through written examinations, allowing students to demonstrate their ability to apply mathematical skills and reasoning to real-world situations.
